Biography
I received formal art training in my twenties from instructors/artists associated with painterly realism: Lennart Anderson, Lois Dodd, Philip Geiger, and Philip Pearlstein. Studio visits and critiques included William T Williams Jr and Lee Bontecou.
Living in NY I explored museums and acquainted myself with gallery culture. Prospect Park and the occasional roof were my plein air painting spots.
I migrated to New Mexico balancing employment as an educator and my studio practice while absorbing the wealth of historic and contemporary art. In 2023 I returned to Virginia and paint near the James close to my home, downtown, and the kitchen sink.
Artist Statement
In March 2020 we became simultaneously connected and separated. This paradoxical intimacy is the nature of my art practice: working in solitude with the purpose of connecting. People sitting alone in public, traces of activity left in detritus or tracks, and my own dirty dishes piling up at home reference our shared spaces and relations.
